Web chat
Use Headmaster from any browser
Web chat gives you your Headmaster agent in any browser, with nothing to install. It is the same agent, the same account and the same memory as the desktop app.
What web chat is
Web chat always runs in Cloud mode. Your agent runs on the Headmaster-hosted workspace assigned to your account, not on the computer in front of you. That means:
- You can use it from any computer or browser.
- Chats you start in desktop Cloud mode show up here too, and the other way round.
- It cannot see files on your computer. For that, use Work mode in the desktop app. See Cloud and Work modes.
Because web chat uses Cloud, it needs an account that has been approved for Cloud.
Signing in
- Go to headmaster.gcaplabs.com.
- Choose Continue with Google, or sign in with your email and password.
- Your chats open.
Use the same account you use in the desktop app. If you do not have an account yet, see Getting started.
Finding your way around
The sidebar
- New chat starts a fresh conversation.
- Your chats are listed by time. Chats you started in desktop Cloud mode appear in the same list, mixed in by time. Click one to open it here and keep going where you left off.
- Memory opens your memory dashboard. While your memory is still starting, the entry is shown but does nothing when clicked. Try again shortly.
- Skills opens your skills and tools.
- Artifacts shows images, files and links the agent made in your recent chats.
Some accounts also see extra entries, such as Bots. These only appear when they are available for your account.
The chat screen
- Message box. Type your request. Use the microphone button to speak instead of typing.
- Model picker. At the top of the chat. It lists the models your account can use, grouped by provider, with a search box and a Refresh models button. Hover a model to see its details.
- Approval mode. Under the message box. Choose how often the agent asks before acting.
- Tool steps. When the agent uses tools, the steps appear grouped under Used N tools. Open the group to see each step. Terminal commands show in their own box.
Choosing a model
Open the model picker and choose a model. Your choice is saved with the chat, so each chat remembers its own model.
Some models offer extra settings. Hover the model and look for Settings for this model:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reasoning: low, medium, high | How much the model thinks before it answers. Higher is slower but better on hard problems. |
| Fast | Uses a faster tier when the model offers one. |
If you see "That model isn't available right now", the list has changed, for example because a provider was disconnected. Open the picker and choose a model from the current list.
To add your own models, open Settings → Models & providers. See Models and providers.
Approvals in web chat
Use the approval mode menu under the message box, or Settings → Personalization → Approvals:
| Mode | What happens |
|---|---|
| Manual (default) | Asks before actions that require approval. |
| Smart | Assesses each action and asks only when needed. |
| Off | Runs without approval prompts. |
When the agent needs approval, a box titled Approve this action? shows what it wants to run. Confirm to allow it once, or cancel to deny it.
Some approvals offer choices that a simple yes or no cannot express yet in web chat. In that case the agent tells you so and does not run the action. Use the desktop app for those.
If the agent needs more information, a box titled Headmaster is asking appears with a question. Type your answer to let it continue.
See Approvals and safety.
Settings
Open your profile menu, then Settings. Here is what each section does.
General
Theme, language, display size, accessibility, notifications and keyboard options for this browser.
Personalization
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Personality | Sets the tone of the agent's replies in new messages. Saved to your account. |
| Time zone | Used for scheduled tasks and for times in replies. Leave it empty to use the default. |
| Approvals | The same approval mode as the menu under the message box. |
Personalization does not change or reset your memory. Memory has its own area.
Account
Shows the account you are signed in with, and the Sign out button.
Models & providers
Connect the models you want to use:
- Subscriptions. Choose Sign in with a subscription. A page opens; sign in there, then paste the code it shows back into Headmaster.
- API-key providers. Choose Add key and paste a key from a provider. Keys are stored securely and never shown again.
- Your own endpoints. Choose Add an endpoint to connect any provider that works like OpenAI, with a name, address, optional key and model.
The provider marked In use answers your chats. You can pick a different model any time from the model menu in a chat.
Voice
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Read replies aloud | Speaks each reply as soon as it finishes. You can also play any reply with its speaker button. |
| Speed | How fast replies are spoken. Use Play a sample to hear it. |
| Dictation | Use the microphone button next to the message box to speak instead of typing. |
If your account does not have voice yet, these settings say so.
Integrations
Connect remote apps so the agent can use them. See Connections and integrations for the details.
Automation
Create and manage scheduled tasks. Choose New task, describe what Headmaster should do, choose how often, and choose Create task. Use Run now to try a task straight away. Results appear in your chats. See Scheduled tasks.
What it can do
A read-only summary of your Cloud agent: whether memory is on, which approval mode is active, and which tools run where.
Artifacts
The same list as Artifacts in the sidebar.
Usage & data
- Usage. Tokens used, daily activity and a breakdown by model, for a time range you choose.
- Your chats. Search your chats, then Open, Share, Export, Archive or Delete them. Archived chats can be restored.
Deleting a chat removes the conversation and any share links for good. If a delete is interrupted, trying again picks up where it stopped.
Worked examples
Pick up a desktop chat on another computer
- In the desktop app, start a chat in Cloud mode and leave it.
- On another computer, sign in to web chat.
- Find the chat in the sidebar and open it.
- Send your next message. The agent continues the same conversation.
Set up a morning summary from the browser
- Open Settings → Personalization and set your Time zone.
- Open Settings → Automation and choose New task.
- Write: "Summarize anything new in my connected task tracker and list what is due today."
- Choose a daily schedule and Create task.
- Choose Run now once to check the result in your chats.
Use your own subscription for one chat
- Open Settings → Models & providers and sign in with your subscription.
- Start a new chat and pick a model from that provider in the model picker.
- Other chats keep their own model.
Limits to know about
- Web chat is Cloud only. It cannot reach files or programs on your computer.
- Regenerate, Continue and editing a sent message are not available for Headmaster chats yet. Send a new message instead.
- Some approvals can only be answered in the desktop app.
- Messaging apps such as Telegram are set up in the desktop app in Work mode, not in web chat.
Signing out
Open Settings → Account and choose Sign out. Signing out also closes your open Cloud chats.
If Headmaster cannot confirm that your Cloud session was closed, an open Cloud chat can stay connected for up to 15 minutes. Sign in and out again to close it sooner.
